Excellent post, Leigh. And as we social workers like to say, "Start where the CLIENT is", listen to THEIR story, reflect back to them what you're observing so they know they are heard and seen.

The unexpected meeting in the elevator 1 month later was surely a gift offered to you, confirming that your insistance she be treated like a human being that night in the Target paid off with her getting the medical treatment that she and her infant needed and deserved.

Yes, meet them where they are! I agree, it did give me some closure even though I still had so many questions. We so often want to have all the answers… but it did feel like a gift to see them again and know they were receiving care.
